Transmogrify,

To transform into something magical or grotesque.

VDH writes about the dumbing of our masses with less work ethic.
The government can't transmogrify them into expert solar panel workers that can compete with China overnight. Especially in a state with massive taxes and regulations like California.

It has always seemed to me that as America has developed since the 60's that we have a culture of extremes. Extremely smart young adults and extremely dumb ones. Extremely ambitious and Extremely lazy. VDH points out that our technology is produced by a few ambitious smart....and used by many that just push the buttons or icons and have no knowledge of the inner workings.

The days of the self made man are fading. ......

Victor Davis Hanson, wrote today about how Obama has set race relations back a few is a racist allegation.

Obama's Racial Crisis

Barack Obama was raised in a middle class white neighborhood, and Herman Cain was raised in a Black neighborhood. Cain’s accent is real and Obama’s is tailored to those in the Black Caucus and it’s constituents.

Obama has an Ivy league degree and lots of friends and donors on Wall street, and Herman Cain came up through the trenches of working in business.

Hanson says that in reality Obama has caused racial strife by his economic policies that has stifled business and hurts employment, particularly to Blacks.

But the left in response says ….well he didn’t spend enough and that is why it didn’t work.

Hanson talks of the irony, of while Freeman may be right that the tea party is influencing the Republican party in Florida, the problem is that while he charges the tea party with racism and all there only purpose is to get Obama a black man out of the White House, the Straw Poll that was influenced greatly by the Tea Partiers chose Herman Cain, that inconveniently for race baiters is black.

Bev Purdue on Suspending Democracy.

Do Democrats want to suspend elections and use ways other than democracy because of the gridlock.

I am sure that most politicians at one time or another, think about the gridlock of democracy and how they could establish their policies if they were a benevolent dictator. Sure , everything would be just fine!

Bev Purdue, The governor of North Carolina makes a this assertation here. In a demonstration of how democracy WORKS she got called on the carpet by the opposition.

I have always wondered about Bob Woodward

Does he really practice access journalism.
I mean the argument would be that his market depends on accuracy or they won't buy his books anymore.

Of course being conservative I search for rebuttals to his criticism.
Here is one from Rummy's staffer Keith Urbahn in this US News article and Harpers

Biography Charles Krauthammer

Just some Bio on one of my favorite syndicated columnists

Krauthammer on Solyndra

Selling solar panels that cost 6 bucks to make for 3 dollars.

I am not a marketing expert but I don't think you can make this up on volume , even with the government involved.

Charles Krauthammer on President Obama's involvement with the company Solyndra and more broadly, his push for green jobs.

Krauthammer: "I do think it is a problem on two levels. There is the problem of the fast tracking and the pressure from the White House to get this done with minimal or faulty analysis so that you can have a photo op with Biden. It may be the most expensive photo American history, it cost half-a-billion dollars. It could show wrong doing, it's not obvious yet, right now who and when?

"But the larger issue is why is the government involved in this in the first place? Waxman is talking about how the CEO misled him. Why is a CEO reporting to member of Congress? He should be reporting to the board of directors, to the shareholders, to the workers, and not to members of Congress.

"There is a corruption in the process. I mean -- this is industrial policy. Government, which is not equipped to picking winners or losers. It's lemon socialism. Look, this is not new stuff. We've had a century of this. And we know the government runs economies, as in the Soviet economy, an extreme example, it creates shambles. And the reason is simple: The market has more information, personal information and it works. Here what you have is imposition of political decisions, which not only makes mistakes because it has less knowledge of the market, but it can be easily corrupted as might have happened here."

New Global Warming Defector
Nobel Prize Winning Scientist
Ivar Giaever

Wonderful letter of Resignation
to the American Physical Society,

Dear Ms. Kirby

Thank you for your letter inquiring about my membership. I did not renew it because I can not live with the statement below:

Emissions of greenhouse gases from human activities are changing the atmosphere in ways that affect the Earth’s climate. Greenhouse gases include carbon dioxide as well as methane, nitrous oxide and other gases. They are emitted from fossil fuel combustion and a range of industrial and agricultural processes.
The evidence is incontrovertible: Global warming is occurring.
If no mitigating actions are taken, significant disruptions in the Earth’s physical and ecological systems, social systems, security and human health are likely to occur. We must reduce emissions of greenhouse gases beginning now.

In the APS it is ok to discuss whether the mass of the proton changes over time and how a multi-universe behaves, but the evidence of global warming isincontrovertible? The claim (how can you measure the average temperature of the whole earth for a whole year?) is that the temperature has changed from ~288.0 to ~288.8 degree Kelvin in about 150 years, which (if true) means to me is that the temperature has been amazingly stable, and both human health and happiness have definitely improved in this ‘warming’ period.

Best regards,

Ivar Giaever

Mark Steyn writes about the riots in England and tying them to the cradle to grave welfare state in England.
The Desparation of Deprivation Myth

This was one poignant remark;

The rioters, meanwhile, have a crude understanding of how the system works. The proprietor of a Bang & Olufsen franchise revealed that the looters had expressed mystification as to why he objected to them stealing his goods. After all, he was insured, wasn’t he? So the insurance would pay for his stolen TVs and DVD players, wouldn’t it? The notion that, ultimately, someone has to pay for the insurance seemed to elude them, in the same way it seems to elude our elites that ultimately someone has to pay for Britain’s system of “National Insurance” — o
r what Canada calls “Social Insurance” and America “Social Security.”

Mark later in the article talks about a new breed of liberals that want to work for the state , or non-profit entities and he brings up as an example the late Jack Layton that was leader of the New Democratic party in Canada.

Jack was the son of a successful Piano Manufacturer and Mark expounds that his non profit socialist type programs were funded by businesses like his fathers but people will only see his government programs as his great work and won't remember that without the huge profits from the piano business the programs would never be possible.
